10 Ways to Reduce Your Auto Insurance

Things you can do to lower your car insurance payment!

It’s a fact of life. If you’re going to own a vehicle, you’re going to need auto insurance. Having automotive insurance is required by law, but it can get pricey.

What can you do to reduce your auto insurance payments? The obvious answer is to drive safely, but we’d like to show you some other ideas that you can use to reduce your rates.

1. Get Multiple Quotes

Before you sign up for auto insurance, don’t be afraid to shop around and get multiple quotes. Each policy is different, and you may find some serious savings, all by asking for quotes from multiple insurance providers.

2. Evaluate the Insurance Cost Before Buying a Car

You may be getting a great deal on that used sports car or new luxury SUV, but the insurance costs may surprise you. Car values differ, and some vehicles are more costly to insure than others. Do yourself a favor and research this information before you buy.

3. Go With a Higher Deductible

If you can afford to cover the cost of a higher deductible, then you can probably pay a lower price for your insurance. The deductible is the amount you pay when filing a claim, so the more you agree to pay a deductible, the less your monthly insurance payment will be.

4. Insure Several Drivers and Vehicles at Once

By combining several drivers and vehicles into one policy, you may be able to save a very large amount. Ask your insurance provider if this would help you save, or talk to other insurance companies to find bundling discounts.

5. Ask About Group Benefits

Many insurance providers offer benefits for various groups. You can find discounts for teachers, military members, nurses, firemen, police officers, students, engineers, and more. Request a list and see if there are discounts for your profession.

6. Take a Safe-Driving Course

If you take a safe-driving course, you may be able to get a serious discount from your provider. Ask if they know any courses in the area that teach defensive driving skills and safe driving habits, and see if this would bring you a discount.

7. Park in the Garage

If you are able to park your car in a garage on a regular basis, it is less likely to be damaged, so clear out your crowded garage once and for all and start using it for the intended purpose: protecting your vehicle. Inform your insurance agent about your parking conditions. Many insurance companies offer special discounts like this one.

8. Get a Car with Multiple Safety Features

While a higher-priced car can mean more expensive insurance, a car with active safety and security features like lane monitoring, driver alerts, a backup camera, and an anti-theft alarm can greatly reduce your insurance premiums.

9. Walk, Ride a Bike, or Use Mass Transit

It stands to reason that the less you use your vehicle, the less likely you are to be in an accident. If you walk, ride your bike, or take the bus to work, tell your insurance company, as they may offer discounts for driving fewer miles. (Don’t lie about your vehicle use though. This could be insurance fraud.)

10. Just Ask!

When in doubt, just ask about any discounts. You have nothing to lose, and you might find some big savings. Tell your provider about your profession, age, driving history, marital status, and any other information you can share to see if there are more discounts waiting just for you.
