We’ve all imagined ourselves driving down the highway in a brand new sports car, but few of us have probably thought of the theft that could come with it. Fortunately, having auto insurance can help.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released their ForeCAST report regarding Sporty Vehicle Thefts in the US.
The report analyzes vehicle theft data from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2012 for 2010-2012 car models. It breaks down sports car models into three categories: Compact Sport, Mid-Sized Sporty and Premium Sporty.
Between the 2009-2012 time frame, 3,780 sporty vehicles were reported stolen, with the most reports coming from California. While Mid-Sized Sporty cars had the highest number of thefts by class, Premium Sporty vehicles were the most unrecovered by percentage.
Here are the top 10 most stolen models:
10. Volkswagon EOS
9. Porsche 911
8. BMW 6 Series
7. Nissan 370Z
6. Chevrolet Corvette
5. Audi A5/S5
4. Porsche Panamera
3. Dodge Challenger
2. Ford Mustang
1. Chevrolet Camaro
It’s interesting to note that while compact sporty and premium sporty vehicles make up the majority of models in the top 10, mid-sized sporty vehicles claim the top 3 spots (by a comparatively large number gap) with popular muscle cars.
